African Long Distance Riding Academy is aimed at riders who want to pilot their big, dual-sport motorcycles up through Africa and return in the same manner i.e. on their bike! This is off road, adventure motorcycling with African touring the specific objective.
This course is the key to long distance African
touring. It empowers the rider to accept the freedom
and responsibility of the open road so that they may
return home bigger people, with a greater sense of
their humanity and African citizenship.

The excellent training facilities are situated in Johannesburg, making advancement possible with a busy Gauteng schedule. Theoretical, mechanical and riding skill modules make up the 12 level program. Twelve levels do not mean 12 course fees! The academy merely audits the more advanced modules.
A critical element of the program is its emphasis on the psychology of the long distance rider. A tough, survival mentality that encourages riders to adopt a zero tolerance for errors that can empower the motorcyclist to tackle challenging terrain, allowing them to enjoy the freedom of the touring experience.
An aviation-like mindset and approach makes this motorcycle course unique. Developed over a five-year period here in South Africa, the material and methods are original and are intended to train the rider of average ability to ride really well.
The practical riding sessions avoids the “observe the instructor, now you do it approach”. Skills are taught with precise attention to detail and technique in an environment unlikely to damage your motorcycle or confidence during those critical learning phases. The African Long Distance’s mantra of “total control, utter precision and perfect balance” forms the basis of all riding sessions. Once a rider has mastered these three fundamental skills, riding well off-road is a breeze.
African Long Distance is proud to be associated with Cytech Tours for Africa who offer the rider access to an African touring knowledge base built up over 30 years. Their excellent workshops and well-appointed auditorium are the venues for the mechanical modules and the theory modules respectively |
