Adventure off road motorcycle touring partner

Uniqueness of the Course

During the five years that this course developed and was researched it became evident that new methods, approaches and terms were needed.

One of the major problems was a term for the style of riding that the academy would impart i.e. enduro, off-road and adventure motorcycling all presented problems as none of them embraced the reality that is Africa. Africa does not have the medical, mechanical, commercial and communications structures of other continents. Therefore a new term was needed to embrace the survival mindset that is absent in all other terminologies.

With this in mind "African Long Distance" was born - a style compatible with independence, self reliance, respect for equipment, respect for others, respect for the environment and a zero tolerance for errors.

Respect for equipment
Respect for others
Respect for the environment

Zero tolerance for errors.

  • In addition, African Long Distance has its own four sets of control signs that it uses i.e. track controls, traffic controls, skill controls and focus controls. These controls are able to keep the training process alive for every rider even when the instructor is assisting a single student.

  • African Long Distance has its own unique set of riding terminologies. Thus allows a single term to embrace half a dozen concepts.

  • Our mechanical module and tyre module are 100% practical empowering riders to repair and maintain their own motorcycles on the road (or in the garage at home).

  • The well appointed Cytech auditorium enables audio visual material, examples and scenarios to be dissected and discussed. Our database of material has no parallel having been gathered from all over the world, over a 32 year period.

  • The unique African Long Distance log book is a document that is used to audit a riders development from novice to veteran. The creation and recognition  of a long distance motorcycling elite is an important element for aspiring novice riders as they enter the sport. We are please that this elite will come from the ranks of experience riders of average, natural riding talent.

  • Our mutating riding tracks constantly expose riders to new challenges as they master each skill level.

  • We are able to determine a rider's smoothness as they move across technical terrain and express this as a number. Thus we can challenge a rider to be less punishing on his motorcycle while still being quick and in control.
